5 Signs Your Driveway Needs Replacing

A driveway takes a daily battering — vehicles, weather, foot traffic — so it’s no surprise that even a well-built surface eventually shows its age. Here are five signs it might be time to stop patching and start planning a replacement.

1. Cracks That Keep Coming Back

The odd hairline crack is normal wear and tear. But if cracks are spreading, deepening, or reappearing shortly after being filled, it’s usually a sign the base beneath the surface has failed — and no amount of surface repair will fix that permanently.

2. Water Pooling After Rain

Standing water on your driveway after rain is one of the clearest signs of a drainage problem. Left unaddressed, pooling water can seep into the base layer, accelerate cracking, and even find its way toward your home or garage.

3. Weeds And Moss Taking Hold

A few weeds between block paving joints are easy to manage. But widespread weed growth, sinking blocks, or moss spreading across a tarmac surface usually points to a deteriorating sub-base — the foundation the whole driveway depends on.

4. Uneven Or Sunken Areas

Dips, sunken patches or an uneven surface aren’t just a trip hazard — they’re a sign the ground beneath has shifted or washed away. This is common where drainage hasn’t been properly considered during the original installation.

5. It’s Simply Had Its Time

Every surface has a realistic lifespan:

  • Block paving: 20–25 years or more
  • Tarmac: 15–20 years or more
  • Resin bound surfaces: 25 years or more

If your driveway is approaching (or well past) these milestones and starting to look tired, a replacement is likely to be more cost-effective in the long run than ongoing repairs.
